The people of karnatka are known as kannad. They are simple and joyful and so is their wedding style. Kannada matrimony style may differ from community to community. There are various sub-kannad communities and thus the wedding style is not same. But still some rituals of kannad marriage are mentioned below. These are:

As in other parts of India, people offer some prayers and follow certain rituals for the joyous and an obstacle free marriage, kannad people also do the same. The ceremony to have a successful marriage is known as Naandi ceremony. Both the bride as well as the groom participates in this ceremony. Other ceremony following this naandi ceremony is known as Kashi Yatra. In this one, the groom acts to leave for some holy place on the pretext that he will not return back. But the bride’s father persuades groom to stay back and enjoy the married life and he even lures him by showing him the bride he chose. And this ceremony is followed by Dev Karya. In this ceremony all the wedding items are placed in front of the diety.

Mandap puja can be considered as the first wedding ceremony that takes place first of all. The mandap where the marriage is going to take place is purified. Bride’s father welcomes the groom by washing the feet. This ceremony is called as Var Puja. The priest chants certain mantras, and bride and groom exchange the garlands. After that Dhare Hardu ceremony is followed, which means the bride is given away by her parents to her in-laws. Then the groom ties mangalsutra on the bride’s neck and this is known as Saptabadi. At last both bride and groom take seven rounds around the fire.

After the wedding, feast is served. After all these ceremonies, bride moves to her new home. At the entrance bride is supposed to knock vessel full of rice with her right foot. The groom also gives a new name to his newly wed bride and carves that name on a plate full of rice with a ring. Next day, parents of bride come to take bride and groom to their home for few days, and after that parents of the groom come to take them back. The kannada matrimony is not so different but different people follow different rituals and customs.
